One thing I noticed in the first season, ash seemed to move from town to town alot faster than he does now. Is it because Kanto is smaller? Or was he just moving faster?

Kanto is a bit smaller compared to the other regions to begin with. It was mostly because the creators had more stories to work around with to keep it actively going popular compared to the day's of Johto where is was merely fillers every single time.

They have to spread out the series as much as possible between generations, that's why Sinnoh is probably going to be as long as Johto.

Thats because it was ash`s first journey and region so they haven`t developed many episodes for it, but nowthey have a lot and it keeps like developingfrom time to time.
