I believe I just trained pikachu up a lot and used its normal attacks, but I dont remember as I haven't played that game in 6 or 7 years. Definitely not as good as red/blue.

Why not just use a grass type Pokemon like Oddish and level it up a bit before the first battle? Because you can't catch any grass pokemon before you fight Brock. You can't leave Pewter City until you've beaten him and oddish/bellsprout aren't wild until you get to Cerulean City.

I used a butterfree and used confusion that's probably the most effective attack at that stage in yellow

Never played yellow, but would probably get a butterfree to kill it. I just don't get how people can stand a fat pokemon walking behind you (and spinning in rocket base "shudders")

I don't have Yellow, but I chose not to use my starter throughout the game. I beaten Brock with a Pikachu and Pidgey, Pikachu at level 12 and Pidgey at level 13.
It takes a while, but you have to use Growl until the attack is all of the way down and then Sand Attack, so even if it does hit it won't be very much. I switched inbetween doing both. Then I just kept using Gust until Geodude and Onix fainted. As you can imagine, it taken a long time, but it is achievable.

Yeah that a good tactic and after you attack with all your power (Tailwip is pretty good to)
